“I was going to law school because everyone told me you would be a great lawyer,” Phantashia recalls. But a high school program at the Northeast Career Center for fashion design rerouted her destiny towards the allure of fabrics and the hum of sewing machines. Under the mentorship of Professor Ron Anderson, Johnson honed her skills and eventually graduated from Kent State with a degree in fashion design, specializing in manufacturing and production.
Phantashia’s day job as a technical designer may be grounded in numbers and precision, but it is through her own label that she unleashes the full spectrum of her creativity. “I’ve always kind of did my own thing on the side just as a creative avenue,” she says, bridging the gap between her technical acumen and her artistic soul.
Her expertise spans a wide range, from alterations and tailoring to pattern-making and sewing custom garments by request. But it’s her background in both the traditional and technical aspects of design that sets her apart from her peers. “I understand more of like the traditional side, what it’s supposed to be,” she explains, offering clients a choice between perfection and practicality.
Expectations are high for her upcoming collection in the Color of Summer showcase, where Phantashia plans to blend African prints with a Japanese textile technique called Jogakbo. This unique amalgamation promises to be a celebration of culture and craftsmanship, a “good night” of “adult fun,” as she aptly describes the event in a phrase.
Johnson not only stands out for her creative talents but also for her business acumen, consulting for small businesses and sharing her knowledge through sewing lessons for kids and adults alike. Her flexible schedule and willingness to tackle “problem orders” that others shy away from underscore her dedication to her craft and her clientele.
The synergy between models and designers is another aspect Phantashia cherishes. “You have to build a rapport and understand who you’re walking for,” she states. Her approach is collaborative and appreciative, offering her models the rights to images captured during shows as a token of gratitude for their work.
